All Sounds: Improvisation Workshops
Jan 25, Feb 1, Feb 8, Feb 15, 2021, 1pm-4pm. King St Arts Centre
Tone List is hosting a series of four free workshops on free improvisation at King St Arts Centre, running weekly from January 25 to February 15.
Playing free improvisation is something anyone can do, regardless of their musical background - it’s a kind of music where any sound is permissible, and all sounds made during an improvisation become part of the music. Openness to what arises, and sensitivity to how every sound influences both the surface and structure of music, are key skills. Those with formal training can bring it to the table, but those without will be on the exact same footing, offering a different perspective.
We want to offer a gentle pathway to understand this music, be a part of it, and gain some perspective for how you might begin to deepen or develop your music practice in this way - whether this be towards totally immersing yourself in this way of making music, or simply exploring how these techniques or approaches could belong in your music regardless of genre.
The workshops will be hosted by experienced improvising musicians from Perth’s community:
Dan O’Connor, trumpet player and founder of Tone List.
Djuna Lee, double-bassist.
Sage Pbbbt, ritual vocalist.
Get Involved
To apply for the workshops please send a simple EOI explaining your background and interest in free improvisation. These EOIs are not ‘assessed’, we’re just curious to know where you’re coming from. You’re also welcome to send a recording or video if you have one available, but it’s not necessary.
It is preferred if you are able to make all or most of the four workshops, but if you are only able to make one or two, let us know and your EOI will still be considered.
You’ll need to bring your own instrument(s) or sound-making objects (or your voice) along.
Send EOIs to Josten at info@tonelist.com.au
Looking forward to hearing from you!
